I chatted with MIHS girls swim coach Chauntelle Johnson this morning just ahead of our deadline to get some of her thoughts on Saturday’s win for the team. The team won the competition and heads into the district meet on Saturday evening with 22 girls competing. Johnson said more than that qualified, but schools are allowed to take a maximum of four swimmers perevent, and if the swimmer has already qualifed for state they have to swim at districts.

Overall she said it was a great meet and that she is looking forward to seeing some of the other local schools MI doesn’t usually compete against at districts before the state meet.

Individually Johnson said Danielle Deiparine had a great 200 freestyle event and a great weekend overall. She finished seventh overall with a time of 2:03.36. Johnson also talked about Kira Godfred, the younger sister of Rachel Godfred, an MIHS grad with a lot of swimmer medals and records attached to her name at Mary Wayte. Kira Godfred, a freshman, finished fifth in the 200 freestyle and took 10th in the 100 freestyle event.

“She had a great weekend,” said Johnson. Others earning a nod for their performances from the coach were Vee Vee Wang and Alyssa Hatsukami for their finishes in the 500 freestyle.

“They both did very, very well,” said Johnson.

The district meet begins on Friday, Nov. 6 at Mary Wayte Pool with the prelims starting at 4:30 p.m. The finals will take place the next day starting at 5:30 p.m. Doors will open at 3:15 p.m. For a full list of last week’s swim results see my story MIHS girls swim and dive captures KingCo title.
