An amazing accomplishment at state golf

This is a little outside what I usually write about on this blog, but honestly it’s too impressive to not mention.

As the Mercer Island girls and boys were busy finishing up their state tournament, the 1A girls finished at Columiba Point Golf Club in Richland, Wash. I mention this tournament because for the fourth time, in a row, Chelan High School’s Kelli Bowers has won the individual state title.

I covered Chelan and it’s surrounding vacinity during my time with the Lake Chelan Mirror and watched Bowers win. During a post state interview she said her goal was to win four in a row, one each year of her high school career. Last year she nailed it, sweeping away the competition. This year, she ended day one four strokes behind Alyssa Maine from Freeman High School, the one golfer thought to possibly challenge Bowers for the title.

Yesterday, Bowers finished the first round an 84 and followed it with a 70 Wednesday, shooting two under course par for the winning overall score of 154. Maine had an 80 the first day and a 75 today to finish just one stroke behind Bowers with a 155.

Bowers will be attending the University of Washington in the fall where she’ll be playing golf.
